First Fall Favorites

As soon as the temperature drops below 70 degrees (oh, alright, 77 probably), I am in full-on lust with Fall. I make a pretty diligent effort to squeeze every last drop of Autumn out of the season, from the first breeze of a late summer night until the very last leaf has fallen, I am in all my glory! Fall signals the beginning (and swift dash through!, as the season seems to grow shorter with each passing year now) of nearly all of my very favorite things: from Fashion Week to Halloween, caramel espresso drinks, boots!, the perfect skinny jean, suede & snuggling, I can’t get enough.

My Bluegrass State’s endless summer of relentless heat gave way to a chill in the air just a few days ago, prompting the start of my annual head-over-heels love affair with Fall.  With Halloween candy already lining the shelves at Target and sweaters and jackets arriving daily at 15 Ounce Premium Denim these days, I want to give a shout out to my very first Fall Favorites this year…

Minnetonka Moccasins - I had a pair (that only came up to my ankle & zipped up the back) when I was in 6th grade.  Lots of kids in my school wore moccasins around that time & I thought they were THE only shoes I’d ever wear again!  As comfortable as being barefoot, and perfect for sneaking up on people.  I remember being quite disappointed when most kids moved on to the Clark’s “Wallabee” Oxford  shoe the next year.

This year, I bought the Minnetonka Triple Fringe Boot.  Everything I remembered (right down to the golden-brown color)  about my beloved moccasins was true for these boots too & it was love at first sight.  They retail under $100, feel like slippers, and I enjoy them equally with cutoffs, dresses and skinny denim.

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil – I prefer the ease of a fat lip pencil to a traditional lipstick for anywhere-application and “velvet” is the perfect word for this one. At $24 each, I expect the color to really last (it does and it’s much creamier than most pencil lip sticks!) and I expect it to not dry out my lips (it doesn’t).  The “Damned” color is a remarkably wearable but strong berry – my new favorite fall lip shade.  (Go ahead and grab that “Dolce Vita” color too – perfect neutral!)

LypSyl Lipbalm -  (as long as we’re on the subject of lips) – I’ve had a part-time job keeping my lips from being chapped for as long as I can remember.  I’ve tried tons of similar products: from Carmex to ChapStick to Burt’s Beeswax…even a $17 Bobbi Brown lip balm, promising to protect my pucker… LypSyl is – without question - my all-time favorite lip balm on the planet. (One year, much to my complete delight, my Christmas stocking was full to the brim with tubes of LypSyl!!)  Made from Swedish Beeswax, and available in two “flavors” (neither of which taste like anything), LypSyl will run you about $3 at any Walgreen’s. I honestly have tubes of this stashed almost everywhere: gym bag, car, desk, handbag, every coat pocket…as long as there is LypSyl, I’ll never have chapped lips again.

Salted Caramel Mocha – my usual Double Tall Skinny Vanilla Latte has to make way for some of the seasonal coffee offerings this time of year…like my favorite, the Salted Caramel Mocha from Starbucks. Too rich and sweet for everyday, I rotate this specialty into days that need a little fall injection, and with just a few modifications, I can enjoy mine (with nonfat milk and no whipped cream) at a guiltless 22o calories and 2g of fat, even with an extra shot of espresso!

If previous seasons are any indication, there will be many more “favorites” to add to the list before Fall has faded into Winter…in the meantime, welcome back, Fall!  I’m so happy to see you…
